GRANTED AUDIENCE TO THE COUNTRY DIRECTOR OF THE UNHCR IN CAMEROON

On Thursday, 13 March 2025, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in Charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, H.E. Felix Mbayu, granted audience to the Country Director of the UNHCR in Cameroon, Madam Yvette Muhimpundu. The Minister Delegate was assisted by the Secretary General, the Director of United Nations and Decentralized Cooperation and the Director of Cameroonians Abroad, Foreigners in Cameroon, Refugees and Migratory issues.

The UNHCR presented its appreciation to the Cameroon government for the active role played towards the preparation and during the “Comité de Pilotage” (COPIL) meeting which took place in Brazzaville on 21 February 2025 during which Cameroon handed over the presidency of the Committee to the Republic of Congo.

The UNHCR expressed its gratitude to the Cameroonian government for the documentation of 25,000 refugees through the issuance of biometric identity cards by the DGSN, which has served as a model in the Central African region. Concerning the identity card, much has to be done, given that 200,000 identity cards have to be issued but this is being slowed down due to challenges related to financing.

Salient among the issues discussed during the meeting, was the continuation of the voluntary repatriation of Central African refugees back to their country of origin.
